What happens to what you type

Short version: what you type and what the tool says back are kept for 30 days, along with which country you are in. Nothing else. Then they are deleted.

What is stored

The text of your message, the text of the reply, the date, and your country. That is the whole record.

What is not stored

No account, because there are none. No name and no email address. No IP address. No city. Nothing that links one conversation to another, or to you.

The conversation on your screen lives in your browser and disappears when you reload the page.

Why it is kept at all

So I can check the tool is behaving. People describe difficult things to Decode:Talk, and the only way to know it is responding well, particularly when someone is in real trouble, is to read what it actually said.

One thing worth being straight about: I can strip the identifiers, but I cannot make the text itself anonymous. If you describe your job and your street and your family, that describes you. Only tell it what you are comfortable having read.

Who reads it

Me. Nobody else has access.

Messages that trigger the crisis response

Kept the same way as everything else, and read the same way.

Having something removed

Email [email protected] and I will delete it. Telling me roughly when you used the tool makes it easier to find.
